Good Stuff to Know

Good Stuff to Know
Mr. Sheridan’s East Coast Trip 2025
WHILE YOU’RE STILL AT HOME AND PACKING
  1. Pack appropriately on your trip and try to stick to the packing list; the more “stuff” you bring, the more likely you are to lose that stuff
  2. If you bring a camera (in addition to your phone), BEGIN your trip with a charged battery and a clean memory card; bring charger and an EXTRA memory card
  3. Learn how to use your camera
  4. A complete packing list is here:

  6. Cash or Card for extra spending? There are benefits to bringing both. We’ll talk “money” at the Pre-Departure Meeting.
AT THE AIRPORT
  1. Line up in alphabetical order for check-in in the ticketing area
  2. Be mindful of YOUR stuff, YOUR carry-on, YOUR boarding pass
  3. Keep your boarding pass with you (don’t put it in a bag) until you’re on the plane
  4. You might want some money for a snack in the airport, but don’t fill up too much
  5. No liquids in carry-on coming or going (including things like snow globes)
ON THE BUS
  1. Bus seats in the front are for the old people (your chaperones)
  2. If you are prone to motion sickness, do not sit too far back in the bus
  3. No flash photography, no light-up toys on the bus at night--it can distract the driver and puts us all in danger
ON THE STREET
  1. You may purchase from street vendors, but buyer beware
  2. Nothing free is ever free; the guy dressed up as the Statue of Liberty wants some cash from every person who poses in the photo with him
  3. Don’t buy things that are against school rules, or which might be a distraction or safety hazard on the trip (laser pointers, noise-making device, etc.)
WHEN YOU HAVE DOWN-TIME
  1. You may feel the need to fill that down-time with your phone; resist that urge
  2. TALK to other people, go read a historical plaque or marker, or simply just sit and people-watch
  3. This trip is a chance for you to disconnect from your digital life and go experience the REAL world
IN THE HOTEL
  1. Choose the person in your room that has the most common sense and appoint that person as the Room Captain; Room Captain is responsible for making sure that all drawers are checked, under the bed, in the bathroom, everything is clear before leaving for the day
  2. DO NOT unpack all your stuff and put it in drawers, closets, or dressers.  That’s how stuff gets lost and left in far-off cities.  Unpack only the clothes and items you need for tomorrow; leave the rest in your suitcase or backpack
  3. Once you’re in your room, you’re in for the night
  4. Keep the bathroom well-ventilated
  5. Keep noise down to a minimum; there are other guests above, below, and to the sides of us who want a peaceful stay
  6. If you see a bottle of water in the room, it’s probably not free.  Please avoid room charges by NOT drinking the $8 bottle of water they provide “for your convenience” in the hotel room
  7. Each hotel room should come with four clean towels each day (one per person); if your room does not have four clean towels, let me or another chaperone know and we will contact housekeeping for you
  8. Before you call the hotel staff for anything, please contact a chaperone first; if you call for things like a mint on your pillow, a roll-away bed, extra towels, or things like that, chances are they might never make it to your room
IN DEALING WITH OTHERS
  1. Be polite and be friendly
  2. Make a good impression
  3. Shatter the stereotype of the “rude and self-absorbed teenager” -- there will already be plenty of those back there on spring break from other schools
IN YOUR STOMACH
  1. Eat light before the flight
  2. Eat fruits, vegetables, and foods high in fiber whenever possible
  3. Restrict soda, especially soda with caffeine
  4. Drink lots of water throughout the day
  5. Be careful with candy

NOW AND ON THE TRIP

Remember that your actions and your choices affect everyone.  When you don’t wash your hands with soap, you share your germs with everyone.  When you have a bad attitude, it affects everyone.  When you make good choices and have a positive attitude, it helps everyone to have a better time on the trip.
